Is this amend than a Concord Fast Money Maker harness?
Honey goodness, non necessarily.
Have you noticed the amount of time and labor it took for me to get this done? (Yes, I could have hacked together a cheap harness, just so we would be comparing apples to oranges, wouldn't we?)
If yous don't have the time to make your own harness, in that location isn't annihilation incorrect with paying someone else to get it washed right. I'yard pretty good at fixing computers, but it takes me forever to do plumbing (and I'1000 frustrated the whole time), plus I lack the experience to overcome plumbing bug, then I hire a plumber.
And time is money. If I made my living on photography, I would probably just get a Money Maker and move on, but I'grand just a family lensman on a upkeep and willing to put in the fourth dimension.
I chose expert-plenty leather from a local retail shop, just if I wanted better leather belts, I would probably end up spending a lot of time, travel and money to become two of the aforementioned texture, color, length, etc. Hold Fast does all this labor for y'all.
Why doesn't Concord Fast sell a cheaper harness? Perchance something with inexpensive leather used in $12 belts sold at Walmart? Goodness! Why should they? If it was your business concern, would you lot sell an inferior product with very, very depression turn a profit margin??? My parents owned a eating place for over 30 years, and they would apace say this is crazy talk.
So DIY works for me, but maybe you found 2 belts yous similar and then get ii slides from Concur Fast. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe some custom belts with nice leather piece of work — i with flowers, rainbows and unicorns and the other with Hell'southward Angels. That would be something to see. Cue "Bad to the Bone" guitar riff.
I divergence that I accept establish is that I did non put D-rings at the top of the straps. (Some people opt out of this option to avert their hair getting tangled in them.) These are for a 3-camera setup or to prune the unused slider to when you are only using one camera, and an option similar this would have been very handy when I sabbatum down for lunch during i long event.
Will this replace my other straps?
Heck no! This is just some other option, and I just carry ii cameras out when I take to. One camera is all I want when I'g traveling, walking with family unit or hiking. Those times, I adopt them on my Peak Blueprint SlideLITE because I can sure-fire them up and constrict the camera behind my back. Or if I am actively shooting without a strap, a Capture Clip on a Pro Pad on my belt or a Capture Clip on my backpack strap are the handy 2nd set of hands that I need.
Couldn't I just use 2 belts and a carabiner or metal trigger snaps?
Well, technically, you lot could. Sounds uber unproblematic, and I've seen the video, but:
- Without some length in the sliders, these belts would have to be actress loose in lodge for you could get the camera up to your eye, and, for me at least, loose belts did non experience secure and would be awkward to pull upwardly to your middle.
- At that place are many kinds of trigger snaps, but unless you use the kind with screw locks like the ones Black Rapid use, I would exist reluctant to use this without some kind of backup strap (like HardFast includes with their current straps). Irish potato's law and human nature would exist happy to find you and make your very expensive camera meet the ground.
Other Textile Options
Like all good do-it-yourselfers, you might accept the materials and tools to brand this a dissimilar way. Mayhap you work with leather. Maybe you take other misc hardware. Hither are a few considerations I encountered while researching.
Nylon webbing instead of leather belts
- I tried this with some flake material that I had. It worked, simply:
- It was more difficult to get on since it was less rigid than leather
- When non used, information technology was just a pile (since it was less rigid)
- I did not try it for long then I can't say much else.
Two i.5″ wide leather belts about 36″ men'south length
- Walmart has functional belts for as footling as $12
- And I could have gone shop to store to find the perfect leather
- But I opted for good-enough $xxx Levi'due south belts from Kohl'due south
- About 36″ men'south length would have worked best for me, simply I could only get 38″ in matching lengths and you can run across that these are a little besides long.
- I recollect 34″ might be doable for some, but your mileage may vary.
- I considered a narrower belt since I primarily shoot ii lighter mirrorless cameras, but I opted for 1.5″ wide for amend shoulder comfort.
- Warnings:
- Too brusk and you might end up with straps uncomfortably under your arms.
- You might find it hard to find ii matching that you lot similar of the same length
- I'm no expert on leather, but I recommend doing some inquiry, angle and working the leather in the store, and considering how the leather will historic period. I, personally, avoided anything sewn since these could go damaged. Faux leather might be ok, merely I personally avoided any labelled "manmade" or didn't say "genuine leather."
**Update** I bought $12 36″ blackness work belts from Walmart to take more colour options to hide the strap more than on black clothes. Since I wouldn't be using this harness often, they should be good enough.
2 one.5″ D-rings
- You certainly could find cheaper D that accept enough force (my local hardware shop had them for $1 each), simply I was willing to pay a trivial more to avoid shiny chrome finish, issues with less durable surface, potential rusting and increased potential for failure (thinner and not welded).
- O-rings might piece of work, too, but it seemed like they would wear out the leather faster.
Other belt joining methods
- The scrap leather that I used to tie the leather belts together in my functional test looked awesome, merely was either too loose or too tight and kept needing to exist retied. (Plus, they were putting dents in the leather.)
- Yous could sew the belts together like this.
- I didn't want to buy a rivet kit and rivets, just if you already have these or are about a leather shop, this certainly would give a finished look.
Slider
- If you already utilize Black Rapid, Acquit Speed or some other product that attaches to a loop on the tripod socket, yous could use bolt snaps or carabiners, but keep in mind that these have no fill-in if they fail which is why Hold Fast includes a fill-in tether.
- You could besides employ other webbing instead of seat belt webbing, but since the straps would rub confronting my hands frequently, I wanted something that would reduce chafe. Leather would be another option.
- I used an elastic band because it would exist light, durable plenty, flexible and not harm the D-ring or gear, but I as well tried or considered using:
- Leather (too bulky or not as effective)
- Metal quick links (besides big and would clink with the D-rings likewise often)
- Plastic quick links (too large the closing slice was rather large and ugly. It would also clink)
- Nite Ize Gear Ties (would motion likewise much)
- Plastic c-rings (would move too much)
I apologize for non giving direct link to some product pages as these links often change, and I am trying to avoid having bad links.
